Contributing comfort to help ease harsh learning conditions

Education is at the top of the agenda for our country and the responsibility of ensuring quality education should not only rest on the shoulders of the South African government. There are many barriers to education in the country, such as malnutrition, poor school facilities and access to learning materials, to name but a few. AEL Mining Services, a leading supplier and manufacturer of explosives, has embarked on a campaign that will look to remedy one such barrier: the lack of a proper school uniform. Thabo Nkoane, Executive: Human Capital at AEL Mining Services says, “One of the many issues we have seen in the areas in which we operate, is that children walk long distances to school, and normally they are barefoot. AEL is a responsible corporate citizen, committed to the sustainability of the communities in which we operate. With this in mind, we are contributing to the ‘Bare Foot No More’ initiative, which has developed a unique school shoe for children especially in rural areas.” The Barefoot No More organisation manufactures affordable shoes locally that are made from an innovative material designed for durability, comfort and flexibility. Nkoane explains, “These shoes are amazing! Not only are they shock absorbent, and do not cause blisters – but – they will stretch to accommodate a growing foot! That must be every parent or guardian’s dream! The school shoe that keeps growing with your child’s foot!” The shoes are also waterproof, do not require polishing, are washable and fully recyclable. “This is an initiative that is stepping very close to our hearts and as such, we are proud to be making a difference to 2 102 children by giving them school shoes,” adds Nkoane. AEL’s roll-out will include delivering 520 school shoes to Sishen Primary school in the Northern Cape, Kayalethu Primary School in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, will receive 510 shoes, Rixilie Primary School in Venetia, Limpopo, will receive 597 shoes and United Primary School in Klerksdorp, North West will receive 475 shoes. “We are very hopeful that our contribution to the community children will make a difference in their daily lives, and most importantly, bring some comfort to the learning journey of many scholars,” concludes Nkoane.
