New generation of BEAM and BEAS angular contact thrust ball bearings for machine tools

Image
SKF has developed the double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings for machine tools where space is limited and easy mounting is required. The high-precision bearings serve as support bearings for the ball screws, which are commonly used to drive the various axes in the machine tool. This application requires a particularly reliable radial and axial guidance, which can be achieved with the bearings of the BEAS (for shaft diameters from 8 to 30 mm) and BEAM series (for bolt mounting and shaft diameters from 12 to 60 mm). SKF has now optimised the ready-to-mount bearings for higher load capacities and speeds. To this end, SKF engineers have modified the internal geometry of the bearings to increase the dynamic load capacity of the latest BEAS models by up to 17 percent compared to their predecessors. The BEAM models reach up to 20 percent more. These higher load ratings ultimately improve the service life and availability of the machine. In addition, the latest BEAM beari

thyssenkrupp hands out boxes of joy to children in care centres

Image
The festive season is usually a time which is spent sharing in the merriment with family and friends. However, for those without families it can be a lonely and sad period. Children living in care centres have neither families nor funds and therefore the holidays often bring little joy. Understanding the plight of these children in need, thyssenkrupp decided to once again join in the deserving Santa Shoebox initiative. The company donated the boxes to two children’s homes in Tembisa and Alexandra on 13 and 14 December 2018 respectively. Since its origination in 2006, the Santa Shoebox has since been collecting and distributing gifts to disadvantaged children across South Africa and Namibia. Filled with daily necessities such as stationary, toiletries and clothing, the Santa Shoeboxes also include a toy and something sweet to brighten up a child’s day. “thyssenkrupp has been participating in the Santa Shoebox initiative for many years, as we believe in its sentiments and making in

Extending the life of mud motor bearings

Image
Mud motor bearings need to be carefully designed because they are called upon to deal with exceptional stresses and particularly harsh conditions The lubrication of mud motor bearings presents particular challenges in the oil and gas exploration sector with bearing failures resulting in costly downtime. There are, however, ways to make motor bearings more reliable, as Roland Muttenthaler, Business Development Manager Oil and Gas at SKF, explains. With many rig and crew costs totalling upwards of €200,000 a day, even the briefest disruption to production can cost oil and gas companies an eye-watering amount in lost revenue. This makes reliability the number one critical success factor in this key energy sector. Reliability is at the core of every development in oil and gas because of its intrinsic link to productivity and therefore profitability. And nowhere is the impact on productivity felt more acutely than at the ‘sharp end’ of oil and gas exploration – the drill string (wh

Asking Specific Questions Brings Fleet Engineered for Coal Mining By Josh Swank, Sales and Marketing Manager, Philippi-Hagenbuch, Inc. Albert Einstein once said, “The important thing is not to stop questioning.” In the mining industry, a lack of inquisitiveness may lead to a blissful ignorance but it certainly won’t increase efficiencies. While one may claim necessity is the mother of invention, questioning and analyzing how methods and systems can be improved is the catalyst to discovering necessities. Understandably, when working in a coal mine, where trucks operate around the clock every day of the year, it’s nearly impossible to pull the nose from the grindstone long enough to provide thorough analysis. But fortunately some manufacturers/”inventors” have assisted by taking a long hard look at the process and ensuing headaches within this application. On the surface, it may appear as though truck bodies don’t deviate much from one design to another with their applications devia

Coal miner community shows the beautiful side of SA

It was a dismal Christmas for thousands of coal miners in Mpumalanga when the formerly Gupta-owned coal mines of Optimum and Koornfontein, now under business rescue, stopped paying workers and contractors in October 2018. It was the same story for workers at other nearby mines: Woestaleen, Boschmans, Klipbank, Setemba and Sandile. In December a group of determined women, all of them employees of the nearby coal mines, decided to do something about it. They set up a non-profit organisation called Feed the Miner and approached local businesses and farmers for donations. Six weeks later the organisation is providing food and grocery hampers to 650 families. All of this is being run out of the Blinkpan home of Christo Mostert, a production foreman contractor at Koornfontein. Scores of miners and their families gather at his house twice a week to receive grocery hampers that should keep them going for a few days. Miners of every race join hands in prayer to give thanks for these modest bles
