NEW MARIKANA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Lonmin through the Community Development department has committed to invest towards the needs of the Community by uplifting the status quo of Education Infrastructure and Quality of Education in the Greater Lonmin community. The New Marikana Primary school project falls within Social and Labour Plan targets for 2014‐2018. The New School is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Basic Education and Sports Development, Bojanala District, Rustenburg. This R17m project complies with the commitments in the Social and Labour Plan (WPL & EPL 2014‐2018) and is line with the Lonmin Education Value Chain. It supports the Department of Basic Education and Sports Development Action Plan 2014 – 2025. The Marikana Community consists of 2 Wards, namely Marikana RDP (Ward 31 Rustenburg) and Marikana West (Ward 32 Rustenburg). In Marikana West, there is a primary school that was built for the community by Lonmin many years ago. Both schools are very congested. In Marikana RDP, there is a combined school that caters for learners from Grade R‐12. The two wards are separated by a railway line, meaning that learners who wish to access either two of the existing schools, would need to cross the railway line, and although it is not functional, poses huge safety risks to learners. The New Primary School currently enrols Grade R to Grade 7 pupils, with the enrolment at a total of 747 pupils. Three local Contractors were commissioned to build the school and a total of 150 jobs were created that benefited local communities. Amongst other Educational flagships within the education stream that Lonmin supported is the extension of local schools, upgrade of local school sports facilities, AET classes and skills development programmes for the community, various Learner and Teachers support Programmes, including post Matric Programmes School Structure  16 classrooms for the Grade 3 to 7 learners.  4 classrooms to accommodate Grade 1 and 2 learners.  The grade R facility that comprise of 2 large classrooms plus 115 square meters under roof open area.  Student ablution facilities for each block of classroom  The School Hall comprise of a 900 seater hall including a kitchen, reception area, toilets, a stage, 2 stores and a general purpose classroom suitable for pastoral use or to serve as a lecture room.  The admin section offer 3 managerial office facilities, a sick bay and conference room as well as ablution facilities.  The large kitchen building where student meals will be prepared including a goods receiving area, store room, refuse area as well as an under roof dining area.  The furniture, equipment and/or resources necessary for the smooth running of the school are supplied by the Department of Basic Education and Sports Development as per the signed Memorandum of Agreement.
