The First Accessible Website of South African Mining Companies

Canyon Coal mining company updated its website and made it fully accessible to Deaf, Blind, Color-blind and Partially-blind users, which is the first example among the South African mining companies. Canyon Coal, which is a mining company who has operations and projects in Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces, has a remarkable corporate social responsibility project. By working in close relationship with SANDA (South African National Deaf Association) and compiling with the requirements given on the website of SANCB (South African National Council for the Blind), the CSR team of the company built up the fully accessible website, which is the first disabled-friendly website among the South African mining companies. In order to make it accessible to Deaf Community of South Africa, the whole content of the website has been translated into South African Sign Language and the videos have been prepared in the studio of Johnathan Andrews Academy. In order to make it a Blind-Friendly one, some specific web design methods, which are specific to the goal, have been used. Why accessible web site for a mining company? Vuslat Bayoglu, the Executive Chairman of the company, summarizes the motivation behind this project as such: Deaf Community in South Africa is struggling to make South African Sign Language the 12th official language of the country. As Canyon Coal, we hear their voices and shoulder the responsibility of diminishing their barriers as much as we can. As Canyon Coal, a socially responsible corporate citizen, we are aware that taking these baby steps is not a “favor” but is our “obligation” to South African people with special needs and the society as a whole.
