Specialist metal and valve companies show their mettle in newer & larger premises

Image
Multi Alloys and Energy Engineered Products (EEP) are enjoying the benefits of their move to newer and larger premises while still remaining in the same Midrand-based Kyalami Business Park where the two companies have been successfully trading for some 20 years. EEP, a leading stockist and distributor of stainless steel round bar, stud bar, pipe fittings and valves first moved into Kyalami Business Park in the mid-nineties and was joined two years later by Multi Alloys, when this business was founded to focus on the specialist metals in 1997. “As the sole employee, I then operated from an office that doubled up as a filing room,” laughs Ken. Successful growth and development meant that before long the companies needed more space and they decided to rent a second warehouse. Although an immediate and practical solution to the space problem, management of a warehouse off-site complicated day-to-day operations; within five years this warehouse too became too small. “Business is about

Chicago Pneumatic introduces two new light towers, the V15s, the first models in the Chicago Pneumatic range to use a heavy-duty polyethylene (PE) canopy. This new canopy coupled with the light tower’s small size, ease of transportation and fuel-efficient performance ensure that the new models meet the demands of a variety of applications. To facilitate productivity by allowing workers to operate safely in any ambient light conditions, the V15 range has two models. The CPLT V15 comes with metal halide technology, while the CPLT V15 LED features LED lighting technology and can light an area apppoximately 25 per cent larger, while proving additional fuel efficiency benefits. A Kubota EPA Tier 4 engine powers both options, and to ensure operational efficiency as well as fuel efficiency the units are equipped with a 28-gallon fuel tank. In practical terms this allows the light towers to operate for many days without the need to refuel, helping to maximise productivity and illuminatio

HVOF (High Velocity Oxy Fuel) thermal spray coatings available from Thermaspray, are used to protect the external high strength low alloy steel surfaces of aircraft landing gear components against corrosion and wear. During landing and taxiing, an aircraft’s landing gear is subjected to a great deal of stress, side-loading and sliding wear. Any coatings applied to protect these large hydraulic units from wear resistance and corrosion must be of first-class standards to be able to withstand these stresses. Until recently, electrolytically deposited chrome plating was the standard surface treatment for landing gear components which are critical safety components on an aircafrt. According to Metallurgical Engineer at Thermaspray, Shaik Hoosain, hard chromium coatings have been the gold standard to impart resistance to component wear, impact and corrosion in aviation, transportation, industrial and consumer products for more than 70 years. “While chrome has proven to be a relatively c

SKF Agri Hubs for slurry fertiliser discs boost farm productivity & profitability!

Image
The new SKF Agri Hub for fertiliser injector discs has been specially engineered to boost farm productivity and profitability through increased performance and improved machine up-time while minimising the impact on the environment. Under mounting pressure to increase yields while keeping input costs to a minimum, farmers look to OEMs for equipment that delivers ever-greater reliability, efficiency and performance. “This can be a challenge particularly for slurry fertiliser discs which operate under extremely harsh, corrosive conditions,” states SKF Key Accounts Manager – Agriculture, Charl Engelbrecht. He explains that typically these machines incorporate conventional metallic hub assemblies to mount the cutting disc on to the slurry fertiliser injector machine. ”However, the low corrosion resistance and poor sealing performance of these conventional units often result in poor reliability and premature failure. The seasonal replacement of these units is an expensive exercise for

Reconditioning of components with Thermal Spray Coatings

Image
The application of Thermal Spray coatings by South Africa’s leading surface coating specialists, Thermaspray, can lead to an enhancement in performance and an extension of service life of expensive engineering parts and industrial components, leading to substantial reductions in downtime and production costs. Engineering components and parts in production processes are subject to degradation through wear, corrosion, oxidation and cavitation. Thermaspray, Managing Director, Dr. Jan Lourens, points out that as all these degradation processes are active on the surface of components, a suitably selected and correctly applied surface coating like Thermal Spray can effectively re-condition production equipment to ‘as new’. “In fact”, adds Dr. Lourens, “very often, through degradation analyses and the selection of a superior coating, a thermal spray coating makes it possible to provide virtually as good as new a component. Most importantly for the end user, this means substantial cost sav

Atlas Copco’s new UD+ 2-in-1 filter solution sets new standards in filtration for compressed air lines

Image
Atlas Copco Compressor Technique’s new UD+ compressed air single filter which replaces the previous generation two-filter solution, gives a 40% lower pressure drop and removes contamination in compressed air down to 0.01 ppm. In-line filters are commonly used in industrial applications to decontaminate the compressed air line, removing concentrations of water and dust (and oil in the case of an oil injected compressor) generally found in compressed air. The two-filter solution is currently used by over 50% of oil-injected compressor applications to achieve suitable quality compressed air, according to Atlas Copco Compressor Technique’s Industrial Air Business Line Manager Charl Ackerman. “The Atlas Copco general-purpose coalescing filter (DD) removes liquid water and oil aerosols down to 0.1 mg/m³ (0.1 ppm) and particles down to 1.0 µm from the air which must then be passed through Atlas Copco’s high efficiency coalescing filter (PD) to remove aerosols larger than 0.01 mg/m³ (0.0
